Fight everything and you burn time on cases with almost no chance. Accept everything and you hand money to friendly fraud. Neither extreme is a policy. The difference between the two is the expected gain from fighting, and the calculator also reports the win rate at which fighting breaks even, so you can apply it as a rule across similar cases.

What the math assumes

Accepting the dispute costs nothing beyond the amount and fee you lose either way, so those are left out of the comparison.

Win probability is your estimate, not a benchmark; the calculator does not know your reason code or evidence quality.
Prep time is valued at the hourly rate you enter, whether that is your own time or an employee's loaded cost.
Effects on your chargeback ratio are ignored, since a dispute counts against the ratio whether you win or lose.

What win probability should I use?

Use your own history by reason code if you track it, since results differ widely between fraud claims, product not received and subscription cancellations. If you have no data, run the tool with a low guess and a high guess and see whether the verdict changes.

Why does the calculator say to fight a case I will probably lose?

Because the amount is large relative to the prep cost. A 30% chance at $400 is worth $120 in expectation, which beats an hour of prep at $30. The break-even win rate tells you how low your odds can go before fighting stops paying.

Does winning a dispute improve my chargeback ratio?

No. Card networks count the dispute when it is filed, so a win recovers the money but does not lower the ratio. That is why prevention and the ratio checker matter alongside this decision.
